Baldurs Gate 3

Review

Baldur's Gate 3 is a very good game and I would recommend it.

The story and choices are where it shines. The characters backstories, and hurdles to overcome are all well written. The main thrust of the plot is interesting. The lore and world building is very good. Most importantly the decisions are usually morally grey and force the player to make decisions with imperfect information. Perhaps if you read all the memos, books, do all the quests you will go into these choices more informed instead of like me who played on easy mode and mostly stuck to the main quest.

I have seen complaints about the ending but I found it to be perfectly fine, good even.

The gameplay is good too. There are multiple diferent ways to achieve your goals in the game that require thought and the right characters with the right skills. The stealth system is good, you can use your characters charisma to talk you way out, cast the correct skill to make the obstacle go away, or just brute force it with combat.

I will say that because I generally can't be bothered to learn in depth game systems I missed out on a lot of this. I just brute forced most problems. Which brings my on to the combat. Again it's a very well done turn based xcom like system. The problem I found is I was overwhelmed with choices, spells, etc. I knew I was playing it wrong because my spell casters where pretty useless for most of the fights and I only used a handful of spells. I bet the system is really good if you learn it and take the time to learn what each spell does and how and when to use it but I just couldn't be bothered. Even with that said the system was still good and worked well.

The enviroments are very beautiful and varied, prefect for a fantasy game like this. If you have a SSD I'd recommend installing it on there as loading times were a bit long on my HDD.

Overall I did enjoy my time with this game due to its good gameplay and great story, it also has great replayability as there are so many side quests that I didn't complete, choices I would make differently, and main characters that I lost very early in the game so I know nothing about (Astarion). There is even a completely new character you can pick (the dark urge) that significantly changes parts of the story. Not forgetting various mods you could try out. This game is definitely deserving of all those game of the year awards it got.
